Rubbing the Rocks
April 20, 2010
As the water temperatures start to settle into the 55-65 degree range everything within the underwater aquatic world seems to be working towards their annual migration habits. “One factor most bass anglers do not consider into their springtime bass equation is the migration of one of a bass’s favorite health food choices crawfish,” advises Bassmaster Elite Angler Mark Menendez, who holds a degree in Fishery Biology. (www.MarkMenendez.com)
“In the northeast sections of the United States, especially within the glacier lakes where there is an abundance of gravel and rock formations, crawfish will start to migrate towards the shallows at just about the same time the bass do,’ says Menendez. According to Menendez gravel and rocky bottoms leading into shallower water become underwater highways for these crustaceans. “The average size of crawfish this time of year is within the 3” range, dark shades of green and brown are prominent in most cases.”
Although it has been documented, ‘Springtime Bass’n’ most likely is a prime time to land the ‘Bass of a Lifetime’; it can also be one of the most frustrating and unproductive seasonal transitional periods for bass anglers as well! “Spring cold fronts especially in the northeast is Mother Natures way of testing our patience and persistence as Bass Anglers”…………chuckles FLW Tour Series, and Lake Champlain Champion Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel, New Jersey.
Connecticut’s Jess Caraballo an FLW Pro Angler is quick to agree, “One day you think you have the bass patterned on either a crankbait or jerkbait technique, as they move shallower towards spawning flats, and the next day they seem to disappear all together?”
Ranger/Evinrude’s Pete Gluszek believes bass are in three different zones. “In this ‘Bass’n Equation’ we have stable temperatures within the water column, registering temperature ranges of 55-60 degrees with a high in extreme shallow back bays reaching a possible 65 degrees on warm sunny days! But, add in a cold front to this and that 65 degree temperature drops instantly to within the 55-60 degree range!” (www.Evinrude.com)
Obviously the five-degree temperature difference is a major blow to those bass we patterned earlier in the warmer shallows…………so where do they go? “According to Skeeter/Yamaha’s Mark Menendez once the crawfish begin their slow crawling parade to the shallows, the bass are close by.” Menendez concludes bass take up residence in deep water, shallow water and occupy what he refers to as ‘funnel feeders’, nomad bass that are on the move within the water column. For these reasons, Mark Menendez highly recommends anglers utilize a crayfish scent. “I always apply a coat of BioEdge Crayfish scent, and suggest anglers do the same. When bits are few and far between BioEdges’s 100% natural crayfish oils can change a fishless day into a productive day on the water!” (www.BioEdgeFishing.com)
The front deck of Andy Vallombroso’s bass boat, just might reveal the secret to where these disappearing bass take residence? “I believe Menendez’s theory wholeheartedly, and bass angler’s need to realize that all of the bass within a body of water do not spawn at the same time!” Reaching for a Power Tackle SPN 43-70 spinning Rod spooled with 8lb Seaguar fluorocarbon line, Vallombroso opened his closed hand slowing. “Most anglers only utilize ‘Hair Jigs’ after ice out, but I can tell you they work tremendously this time of year as well!” (www.PowerTackle.com) “One other very important factor is shallow bait fish,” adds Vallombroso. “I scan sunny shallow sandy bare banks looking for baitfish.”
Vallombroso is a smallmouth expert and a ‘Master’ at tying Hair Jigs! (Visit Vallombroso’s web site @ AndysCustomBassLures.com) In his Nutmeg state of Connecticut, Andy spends enormous amount of time on Candlewood Lake a pristine smallmouth and largemouth highland reservoir situated along the Connecticut New York border. “I believe smallmouth bass will move towards the shallows before the largemouth’s do, and to me a key water temperature is 56 degrees.” Concentrating on water depths ranging from 8-10’ Vallombroso monitors his Lowrance HDS sonar electronics looking for steep rocky banks close to the spawning area, when the reaction bite from faster moving baits seem to disappear.
“My go to bait is a 1/8 oz Silver Fox Rattlin Hair Jig made out of real Fox hair, I never attach a trailer and I utilize both round and football jig heads,” claims Vallombroso. Logging his jerkbait bass suspended over 10-15’ of water and holding in the 8’ range, Vallombroso works his lightweight Silver Fox hair jig in a shaky worm fashion in and out rock and gravel bottoms barely moving his hair jig with his extremely sensitive Power Tackle rod in a hook setting position. “It’s imperative that anglers utilize fluorocarbon line for this technique!” Vallombroso utilizes 4-6 lb Seaguar TATSU Fluorocarbon line. (www.Seaguar.com)
California’s Matt Paino of Optimum Baits (www.optimumbaits.com) is an expert when it comes to incorporating the Japanese Finesse version of the Shakey Head Worming technique! “My years of worm fishing experience, has taught me there is no wrong way to present a plastic worm!” Then with a bass-eating grin, “However, I’ve also learned that there are certain techniques that will out perform others, especially during seasonal transitions as in this scenario!”
Living in Japan Matt observed the studious tactics applied by competitive Japanese bass anglers in their efforts to improve their presentations in the most natural way possible. “The Japanese have created a technique they call “INCHI WACKY” or translated meaning “Jig Head Wacky!”
Two of Japan’s Top Bass anglers have fined tuned this technique to perfection, Takuma Hata of Zappu Inc. and Toshiro Ono of Jackall Inc. Paino claims the key to success with the Jig Head Wacky technique is in the rigging. “When rigging the worm, it is vital that you position the hook by inserting it in the middle of the worm and have it exit at a 90 degree angle from the insertion point. The worm will then be fixed tight on the hook allowing the worm to be presented more naturally with a very irregular enticing action.”
When it comes to choosing jig heads Paino says the V-Shape angled hook on the Zappu Tungsten Jig Heads not only keeps the worm permanently anchored on the hook, but the angle of the line tie coupled with the sensitivity of Tungsten aids in detecting both bottom cover and subtle bass bites.
“This technique is absolutely awesome when applied to rock piles, drop-offs, vertical structure points and especially in deeper locations when bottom contact is imperative.” Matt Paino suggests anglers choose worms that are balanced, since the technique requires impelling the jig in the center of the worm. As for jig head sizes, this west coast finesse angler relies on Zappu jig head weights of 1/32 to 1/16 oz more often than not. “There are times in deeper situation when I will turn to a 1/4oz head, but I’ve learned from the Japanese this technique works best with the lighter head weights.”
So which worm does this Japanese Finesse Shakey Head Worm expert prefer? “Optimum Baits has designed a complete Rabbit Fur Series of worms specifically for the “INCHI WACKY” technique, my go to bait for this scenario would be the 4” Teaser rigged Wacky on a Zappu Jig Head. But, I will also have two other rods rigged with different Zappu jig head weights. One with the Rabbit Fur grub and the other with a Rabbit Fur 4” straight tail worm rigged Texas style for the traditional Shakey Head presentation.”
Pete Gluszek has a change-up deliver of his own he refers to as ‘Power-Finesse’ (www.TheBassUniversity.com) for these tough conditions. “This is the time I will turn to lighter weight casting jigs with spider grubs and work them along deeper tapering banks covering areas between vertical banks and 45 degree banks up to the spawning flats. The bass are most likely spread out since they have not committed themselves to the spawning flats, so it’s important to cover lots of water, while concentrating specifically on rocky bottoms!”
Gluszek’s arsenal consists of his lighter weight offerings tied to fluorocarbon 10-15 lb test line spooled on a baitcaster, saddled to a Rogue 7’ extra heavy rod. (www.roguerods.com) Monitoring his electronic this Buckeye Lures Pro Staffer (www.BuckeyeLures.com) is constantly looking for isolated cover. “Isolated cover in the form of rock piles, wood and brush piles or possibly deeper grass patches are bass magnets for Big Bass!” This is when the FLW Stren Series Lake Champlain Champion turns to utilizing larger jigs to fill his livewells. “I’ll utilize the same Rogue 7’ extra heavy rod with 12-15 lb fluorocarbon line tied to either a 3/8 or 1/2oz black or brown jig and dissect the isolated cover from every angle until I entice the bass to eat.” If the water is clear, this Evinrude Pro Staffer turns to a Green Pumpkin jig, while all of his jig presentations are paired with matching plastic pork trailers.
The next time you’re pounding the shallows and your bass have disappeared, try pointing your bass rig in the opposite direction, down size your presentation, add BioEdge Crayfish scent and start “Rubbing the Rocks”!

“The Bass University Ranks #1 with Students
December 17, 2009
By Billy “Hawkeye” Decoteau
Runnemede, NJ Dec. 5th & 6th: “Today’s inquisitive bass anglers strive for the highest level of technical bass information possible!” says The Bass University Co-Founder Peter Gluszek. And, according to Ricky Bodsford of www.BassEast.com they were not disappointed.
“Pete and Mike (Bassmaster Elite Angler Mike Iaconelli, and Co-Founder of TBU) managed to pull off the most extraordinary two-day instructional bass seminar program to date!” Elaborating further the www.BassEast.com President continued, “The response we received from attending students was absolutely 100% positive! That in and of itself is unheard of, especially when dealing with a wide range of student demographics.” (www.TheBassUniversity.com)
Scanning a classroom filled to capacity, eager Bass University students logged continuous notes, ran tape recorders and spoke out asking individual instructors to repeat specific step-by-step techniques when needed. “We hand-picked each of our Professional Bass Angler Instructors, based upon a variety of factors,” replied Iaconelli.
According to Mike Iaconelli, he and Pete Gluszek sought out members of their peers who not only carry the tours highest achievements, but those professional anglers who are willing and able to share their successful tactics and strategy within a classroom harvesting a wide range of individual student knowledge.
“Our marketing department did an awesome job in reaching out to every level of bass angling enthusiast. Look around the classroom, our Bass University student body consist of federation anglers, youth anglers, parent child and recreational anglers of all ages,” smiled Gluszek. “And, what excites me most is that for the very first time in this type of seminar format, (as far as Gluszek could recollect), a large portion of our Bass University students are actually competitive anglers who compete on the FLW Outdoors Stren Series, BFL Series, Bassmaster Opens and/or the Bassmaster Weekend Series.” (Log unto www.Bassmaser.com, www.FLWOutdoors.com)
Bass University student and FLW Outdoor Stren Series angler Dan Welch of West Virginia was overwhelmed with the amount of information he personally received. “I adamantly agree with The Bass University motto….NEVER STOP LEARNING,” insisted the likeable FLW Professional Angler. “Every time I asked a question, and believe me I had plenty, the instructors made certain every detailed portion was thoroughly covered.” Dan Welch himself has his own list of accolades framed around his B.A.S.S. win on Lake Murray in 2002, when he outdistanced Todd Auten, Davy Hite and Scott Martin, claiming the Citgo Bassmaster Southern Open Championship trophy. Welch’s single comment on The Bass University program, “This by far is the best weekend seminar program I have ever attended and I have been to ‘All’ of the previous programs!”
Why Runnemede, New Jersey some questioned? “That’s a no-brainer!” says Mike Iaconelli. “This is where I started my career bass fishing with my Uncle, this is where I developed deep-rooted friendships with other federation anglers and the Runnemede area is where I live!”
Bass University Co-Founded Pete Gluszek, was quick to add, “Mike’s power angling phrase is “NEVER GIVE UP”, add that to our Bass University motto of “NEVER STOP LEARNING”, and together Mike and I (Gluszek is also a New Jersey native.), knew in our hearts that we owed it to everyone within the Runnemede area who helped us and continue to support us to build the foundation of The Bass University right in our home town!”
Obviously, Iaconelli and Gluszek have an extremely strong allegiance within their bass fishing community that extends to every level of bass angling, as witnessed within the jamb packed classroom. New Jersey Federation Show Director Joe Poms and most of his bass club members, including New Jersey’s Top Youth Anglers filled the front roll seats. “You might say both Mike and Pete “NEVER FORGET WHERE THEY STARTED”, chuckled Poms. “You can’t say that for every professional bass angler! And, when it comes to supporting our youth programs Mike Iaconelli far exceeds his peers, in my opinion!”
The Seminar Instructors: With breakfast, check-in and registration completed, Bassmaster Elite Angler Dave Wolak, (www.DaveWolakFishing.com) presented the first Bass University seminar. “I’m going to take you into the underwater world of aquatic vegetation. Together we will dissect the various types of vegetation, eliminate the bad habit from the bass holding habitat, and develop a better understanding of dead vegetation versus healthy vegetation.”
Immediately the classroom atmosphere likened that of a University Library! Toyota’s Dave Wolak, dimmed the lights, started his power point video presentation, and students followed underwater cameras as their Ranger/Yamaha mentor guided them to a better understanding of why bass occupy specific types of vegetation, when and where to locate bass within vegetation, and making proper presentations, enticing bass to eat their baits!
Wolak’s afternoon seminar session utilized the same high quality video presentation, as this time The Bass University (www.TheBassUniversity.com) students dissected Matted Vegetation. Beginning on the surface the Bassmaster Elite Angler Instructor guided his students instructing them to become aware of the surrounding areas adjacent to matted vegetation. Following the transitional and seasonal migration of the Black Bass, Wolak’s underwater cameras helped Bass University students focused on a visual understanding of where and why to locate bass within Matted Vegetation.
Joining Dave Wolak, Gerald Swindle, (www.GeraldSwindle.com) the “G-Man”, utilize his extensive Crankbait and Comedy persona, as students complied notes upon notes in the proper techniques for shallow water cranking. Listening to Gerald Swindle invite every Bass University student to the front deck of his Triton, he held nothing back when it came to opening his tournament winning tackle box.
George Jr. and Mike Acord proprietors of Susquehanna Fishing Tackle (www.SFTTackle.com) and sponsors of The Bass University programs were quite impressed with Swindles enthusiastic concern in making certain every students question was answered. “Gerald actually walked into our tackle booth, pulled several Quatum rods off the rack, and asked for specific Quatum reels. He then demonstrated to these students why specific rods were imperative to successful shallow water cranking in heavy cover, such as brush piles and downed trees!”
Smallmouth gurus within The Bass University classroom swarm FLW Tour and Lake Champlain Champion Pete Gluszek, like bees on honey, begging for more and more information on their favorite quarry. “Listening to Pete’s two-day seminars, I could visualize the exact situations I had encountered previously with smallmouths.” Said one Bass University student. While others waiting in line waiting for Gluszek’s autograph, agreed the Ranger/Evinrude Pro Anglers seminars on smallmouth bass behavior incorporating power finessing smallmouth bass was indeed a tactic to be added to their techniques for filling their tournament livewells!
Louisiana’s FLW 3-Rivers Champion and Bassmaster Elite Classic Qualifier Greg Hackney sat in on every seminar he could. “I am elated to see that my colleagues are not holding anything back from the Bass University Students. The information being shared is without a doubt the most detailed and comprehensive I have experienced!”
The Bass University students had the same to say about Greg Hackney, especially the eight Youth Anglers who enjoyed sharing a private ‘Pizza with the Pro’s’ session. “The future of our sport lies in the youth anglers of today,” voiced Hackney. Hackney elaborated on the outstanding level of knowledge within the classroom. “The one thing I enjoy when I’m not on the water fishing is talking about being on the water fishing.” Hackney like the ‘G-Man’ when on presenting seminars…………could be found in the Susquehanna Tackle booth one-on-one with students explaining proper rigging techniques for balanced tackle.
PAA (Professional Anglers Association) Board member and B.A.S.S. Northern Open Upper Chesapeake Champion Dave Mansue presented the most informational and outstanding instructions for understanding winning techniques for fishing Tidal Water bar none! Displaying a power point pictorial description of tidal movements based on a variety of factors, Mansue walked Bass University students cast-by-cast through his championship game plan. Answering prevailing questions from students on tidal waters such as; the Potomac River, Connecticut River, Hudson River and the James River.
Mike ‘Ike’ Iaconelli, kept Bass University students on the edge of their seats with his two-day dynamic Finesse power-point presentations, as only Iaconelli can. Walking up and down the aisles, Iaconelli made personal contact with every student. “I cannot believe how patient Mike Iaconelli actually is,” replied one BU student. Adding, “There were several of us all asking the same basic questions. Mike put us in a circle and gave each of us a hands-on one-by-one demonstration of his ‘Tail Weighted French-Fry’ technique!” Laughter, questions, and an occasional shout of encouragement by ‘Ike’, landed the Bassmaster Classic Champion a standing ovation, as the Co-Founder of The Bass University completed the final Runnemede, New Jersey seminar.

Pete Gluszek’s 2010 Tour Decision
December 12, 2009
Mount Laurel, NJ. (December 12, 2009)
Bass East Senior Editor Bill Decoteau hosted a private exclusive interview today with Professional Bass Angler Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel, NJ as to Gluszek’s tour decision for the 2010 season. While many Professional Bass Anglers strive to qualify for a tours highest level, New Jersey’s Pete Gluszek found himself at a crossroad by qualifying for both the B.A.S.S. Bassmaster Elite Series and FLW Outdoors Prestigious Tour Series.

“I’m elated to have reached such a pinnacle in my career! It isn’t very often within the Professional Ranks that an angler has to choose between the two highest levels of competition!”
Evaluating his situation Gluszek assembled an in-depth list of primary factors to guide him throughout his decision making process. “I had three extremely important factors to consider; Tournament Locations/Dates, Entry Fees, and my personal Obligation to The Bass University!” (www.TheBassUniversity.com) With the monetary figures compiled, a charted calendar with tournament locations and dates, and a list of his personal obligations New Jersey’s Pete Gluszek made his decision. “I made a personal call to B.A.S.S. thanking them for the opportunity, but declined their offer. Then I called Charlie Evans and the FLW Tour Director, confirming my decision and commitment to the Prestigious FLW Tour Series.”
Pete Gluszek elaborated on his decision. “In my opinion I honestly feel the FLW Tour Series offers the best competitive professional format overall! In an economy where everyone is struggling, the FLW lowered their Entry Fees, a move that told the anglers they understood our financial needs. Then the leadership within the FLW made an unprecedented change in their tournament format. Off limits on the day of registration allows anglers to pre-pare tackle, repair any major items, rest up while being mentally and physically ready for competition! The expansion to three-full competition days for the entire field, before the final cut-day, alone levels the playing field, allowing the very best anglers to recover from a bad day, and still has the opportunity to collect a check. ($10,000.00 for 50th Place) Factor in sponsorship incentives, plus the Ranger Cup Program, all of which I qualify for, and my decision became much easier.
When it came to his third Factor ‘Personal Obligations’ Pete Gluszek says, “The FLW commitments to educational activities within the sport of competitive bass fishing at the Stren Series College Bass Program, coupled with their involvement with The Bass Federation, was right inline with my commitment for teaching and growing the sport through The Bass University seminar program and our ‘Never Stop Learning’ slogan!”
Pete Gluszek says his decision to compete on the FLW Tour is a perfect opportunity for everything he believes in. “One other huge factor for my decision, is the FLW expanding their ‘Fun Zone’, allowing their FLW Professional Bass Anglers to promote any and all of their individual sponsors……………In my case, The Bass University!”

“The Bass University”…..Sign-up Today!!!
October 18, 2009
So just what do Professional Bass Anglers such as Mike Iaconelli, Pete Gluszek, Dave Wolak, Ish Monroe, Gerald Swindle, Brent Ehrler and Michael Bennett (Just to name a few!!!) all have in common? “It’s simple!” laughed New Jersey’s Pete Gluszek. Adding, “Everyone of these Bassmaster Elite and FLW Top-Professional Touring Anglers will be joining Mike Iaconelli and I as we travel across the United States hosting ‘The Bass University’!” ( www.TheBassUniversity.com )
For years groups have tried to come up with a weekend seminar series re-placement for the former Bass Fishing Techniques, then name changed to Bassmaster University when acquired by B.A.S.S.. Originally founded by Mr. Gary White, now a member of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, nothing has compared to White’s dedicated interest for increasing an angler’s educational growth in the sport of Bass Fishing both on and off the water!
Gluszek is quick to acknowledge, “No doubt, Gary White is indeed the foundational corner stone to the formation of the weekend Bass-Fishing seminar programs!” Both Pete Gluszek and Mike Iaconelli are former B.A.S.S. Bassmaster University seminar Instructors. And, ‘Ike’ attended the Bass Fishing Technique seminars as a student during his New Jersey B.A.S.S. Federations days!!!
“Mike and I have been evaluating the content of seminar programs across the country, while also listening to the feedback we have received from angling students that have attended these programs,” says Gluszek. “The feedback we are receiving is that a majority of these students are ready for an advanced class! They want to know every minute detail to what we do, when we make changes in locations or baits, and why we make these decisions that leads to our success.”
Listening to Pete Gluszek’s enthusiasm, I felt as though we were actually on the water in search of our favor quarry…The Black Bass! Opening a compartment on his NASCAR Ranger bass boat Gluszek pulled a crankbait out of a plastic plano box. Handing it to me he asked me to examine it closely then explain how and where I would fish it. Answering my mentor with what I thought was a decent response I replied, “First I’d tie a snap on my line then attach the crankbait to it. (I said this because I knew Gluszek utilizes a snap!!!) Since the bill shape and length dictate it is most likely a medium diver, 8-12′, I would throw it in water of this depth on a medium action crankbait rod!”
With a bass-eating grin on his face Gluszek asked, “Is that all?” “No, I would vary my retrieve speed in an effort to learn just how the bass wanted my presentation!” Retrieving his crankbait from my hand, Gluszek held it by his fingertips, and responded, “Those are all correct answers, and in most cases exactly what I would expect from the majority of bass anglers.”
Pausing for a moment he looked me in the eyes and asked, “Would you throw this into submerged trees or down timber?” Quickly I flipped Gluszek my answer, “Most likely not…. unless I wanted to lose it, as it does have two sets of treble hooks!”
“Well, at ‘The Bass University’ seminars I will take students into those downed trees and submerged timber with crankbaits, explain to them how to make the correct modifications to their tackle to work this technique, when it works best, and most importantly the proper way to retrieve a crankbait through a forest of hang-ups to reach the bass they have been missing for years!”
As Pete Gluszek, continued to enlighten me as to their class format and all the extras attending students would be receiving, it was indeed obvious both he and Mike Iaconelli had left no stones unturned in their quest to bring America’s Bass Anglers the most comprehensive detailed, organized seminar program possible! Here are just some of what attending bass students will receive;
- Complete Course Outline for easy reference to Topics
- FREE Tackle Gift Package
- FREE One-Year subscription to Bassin Magazine
- FREE ‘The Bass University’ T-Shirt

- One-One Instruction from ‘Today’s’ Best Bass Pro Anglers
“Mike and I have recruited the most consistent and respected Professional Bass Anglers available, arranging for their appearances at ‘The Bass University’ locations where they have been most successful,” suggest Gluszek.
For example, Pete Gluszek has won more Tidal Water tournaments, than most Pro Anglers, not to mention he is a Licensed Guide on areas such as the Chesapeake Bay Region, so you can expect to have Ranger/Evinrude’s Pete Gluszek talking changing tides and catching bass at the December 5th Philadelphia, PA location. And, lets not forget Gluszek, is also a Lake Champlain and Lake Erie money winner, having qualified for the most prestigious Bass Trails in America……The Bassmaster Elite Series and the FLW Tour Series!!! (www.PeteGluszek.com)
The following is a list of the four locations across the United States to host Gluszek’s and Iaconelli’s ‘The Bass University’ 2-Day seminar programs;

“One other item that will certainly add to the program will be our Tackle section of vendors. We have contacted only the very best in the industry, offering them ‘Free’ vendor space, which in turn will allow them to offer ‘The Bass University’ students discounts only available at our seminar locations!”
As I sat in Gluszek’s Ranger bass boat, I felt as though I was actually in ‘The Bass University’ classroom! Expressing my excitement to Pete Gluszek he responded, “This is exactly the feeling we want every student attending to walk away with! Our Professional Bass Instructors will be utilizing a variety of teaching aids to enhance their presentations, from highly technical power point and video presentations right down to hands-on presentations!”
So if you want to sit in the boat with America’s Top Professional Bass Anglers, learn their winning techniques, my advise is to call today and reserve your seat ASAP, as seats are limited and this is one time you don’t want to be fishing from the shore!!!
See you in the classroom at “The Bass University”.
Top Pros Make 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series, Bassmaster Classic
September 27, 2009
Bassmaster Northern Open Division’s Top Seven Qualify for Bassmaster Elite Series; Top Two Make 2010 Bassmaster Classic
SANDUSKY, Ohio – As the top two finishers in the season’s Bassmaster Northern Open division standings, Frank Scalish of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Bassmaster Elite Series veteran Kotaro Kiriyama each earned a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic.
Scalish, who finished the weekend’s Northern Open on Lake Erie in third place Saturday, will be fishing his second Classic, while Kiriyama, who finished 15th on Lake Erie, will compete in his 10th Classic.
“When I came down here, my only goal was to make the Classic,” Scalish said. “Mission accomplished.”
The two pros – along with the rest of the top seven in the final Northern Opens standings – have also been offered a shot at BASS’ highest level of fishing, the Bassmaster Elite Series. Both accepted the invitation.
The Opens were Kiriyama’s means of requalification this year as he didn’t not requalify based on his Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standing.
Scalish finished the season with 880 points, 120 ahead of Kiriyama. Scalish placed third at both the Erie event and the inaugural Northern Open at Chesapeake Bay. In the second Northern Open on New York’s Lake Champlain, he placed second.
For Kiriyama, a 20th-place finish at Lake Champlain was a thorn, but he managed second place at Erie and fifth at Chesapeake Bay, good enough to secure a spot in both the Classic and the Elites.
It looked like Scalish had the Erie Open wrapped up until Jonathon VanDam – nephew of 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam – weighed in the heaviest stringer of the tournament, a 24-pound, 8-ounce bag of smallmouth, Saturday.
Day 1 leader Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel N.J., also finished the final Open ahead of Scalish. While VanDam wasn’t a threat to Scalish’s chances for a Classic or Elite Series berth, Gluszek was.
Gluszek fell just short of a Classic appearance. His last Classic appearance was 10 years ago in 1999 on the Louisiana Delta. He will be offered an Elite Series invitation by virtue of his third-place finish in the Open standings.
“This is the fourth time I’ve been one spot out of the cut,” he said. “Of course I wanted to make it (to the Classic), but I guess I’m happy where I am; this is what I do.”
Other pros who will be invited to fish the Elite Series: J. Todd Tucker of Moultrie, Ga., who will fish his sophomore season in the Elites; Aaron Hastings of Boonesboro, Md.; Brian Bylotas of Olyphant, Pa.; and Steve Oleksyn of Rochester, N.Y.
Sponsors of the 2009 Bassmaster Opens: Toyota Trucks, Berkley, BOOYAH Baits, Evan Williams Bourbon, Mercury, OPTIMA Batteries, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Marine.

Jonathon VanDam Wins Northern Open at Lake Erie
September 27, 2009
Familiar Name Atop Leaderboard as Jonathon VanDam Wins Northern Open at Lake Erie
SANDUSKY, Ohio – Jonathon VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., hauled in 24 pounds, 8 ounces – the largest bag of the tournament – to claim his first BASS win Saturday in his first tournament on Lake Erie, the third and final 2009 Bassmaster Northern Open. His two-day total of 44 pounds, 14 ounces was nearly 3 pounds ahead of runner-up and Day 1 leader Pete Gluszek. The 21-year-old VanDam is the nephew of 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam, a five-time AOY.
“This has been my dream for a long time; I’m really pumped right now,” Jonathon VanDam said. “I’m speechless. I’ve been close a couple times, and this is awesome.”
VanDam had to change his approach to the lake Saturday as the lake was much calmer than it had been Thursday for Day 1 competition. He reverted to a pattern he found in practice, throwing a Strike King Series 5 crankbait in Sexy Shad color. He keyed on rock piles and sharp humps in the lake bottom near the bank.
“I tried drop-shotting in the morning, but it wasn’t working too well, so I made a bit of a milk run to several places and started catching fish on the crankbait,” he said. “The key was to cast beyond the rock pile or hump and have the bait bump into it on the retrieve. That’s when they’d hit it.”
After Friday’s competition was cancelled due to high winds, Day 1 leader Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel, N.J., could manage just 18-2 on Saturday to claim second place. Gluszek was drop-shotting rock piles, but he broke off several keeper fish, which kept him from his second BASS win.
With a third-place finish, Frank Scalish of Cleveland, Ohio, managed to win the Northern Open points race and earn a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic as well as an invitation to fish the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series.
As the top two pros in the Open division, Scalish and Elite Series pro Kotaro Kiriyama were awarded berths in the Classic, set for Feb. 19-21 on Lay Lake out of Birmingham, Ala., while the top seven competitors have been invited to fish the Elite Series.
“I really wanted to win this event, but I accomplished what I came here to do, get to the Classic and fish the Elites,” Sclalish said.
He was forced to think on his feet after heavy rains wiped out a shallow bit he found on Day 1, so he headed to deeper ledges and dragged a YUM tube around them.
Dick Parker of Amherst, Ohio, took fourth with 40-4, and Garrett Green of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, was fifth with 39-9.
On the co-angler side, first-place finisher Terry Ford of Westerville, Ohio, took home a $32,000 Triton/ Mercury boat and motor package for his two-day total of 34-8. Ford usually fishes on the pro side, but he was recently forced to sell his boat to pay for a surgery his wife required.
“The only way we could get the money was to sell the boat,=2 0but that wasn’t a very hard decision,” he said. “I know there was someone watching out for me on this one. Next year I’ll be back as a pro in a brand new boat. I’m pumped.”
Ford drop-shotted through both days of competition, and was fishing within sight of eventual runner-up Gary Besmer of East Islip, N.Y.
Joshua Kolodzaike of Toledo, Ohio, took third place in the co-angler division with 33-13, Mike Hauer of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, took fourth with 32-2 and Mike Staebler was fifth with 32-0.
After zeroing on Day 1, co-angler Stephen Schneider of Selden, N.Y., shot up to 14th place with a 23-pound, 7-ounce bag anchored by the big bass of the tournament, a 7-pound, 1-ounce smallmouth.
Sponsors of the 2009 Bassmaster Opens: Toyota Trucks, Berkley, BOOYAH Baits, Evan Williams Bourbon, Mercury, OPTIMA Batteries, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Marine.

New Jersey’s Pete Gluszek Takes Day 1 Lead at Northern Open on Lake Erie
SANDUSKY, Ohio — Favorable weather helped Pete Gluszek of Mount Laurel, N.J., take the Day 1 lead with 23 pounds, 13 ounces of Lake Erie smallmouth at the last stop on the 2009 Bassmaster Northern Opens circuit. Gluszek made a long run Thursday to water that might not be accessible Friday if the forecast holds.
“They’re calling for 6- to 7-foot waves tomorrow so that could really hamper where I can go,” Gluszek said after Thursday’s weigh-in. “Today was nice though, I was able to go right where I wanted and catch a lot of big fish.”
Gluszek’s limit was the best of the 50 or so fish he caught while drop-shotting, a technique new to the New Jersey angler.
“I had to learn it because I was always getting beat up here by guys drop-shotting,” he said. “So I’ve been working hard on it recently. It used to be one of my weaknesses.
Gluszek said he is cautiously optimistic about his chances of repeating Thursday’s performance, but the weather is always the wild card on Erie. “You never know, this place could throw you a curve.”
One pound, 1 ounce behind Gluszek after Day 1 was Garrett Green of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada with 22-12. A stroke of good luck got Bracebridge and his co-angler to the top of the leaderboards.
“By 2:30, I only had about 10 pounds,” Green said. “All of a sudden we found this hungry school of smallies, and by 2:45 I had what I have now.”
Green added 10 pounds to his limit by tossing a drop-shot rig.
Rounding out the top five were Chris King of South Amherst, Ohio, in third with 22-8; Joe Balog of Harris Township, Mich., in fourth with 22-7; and Jared Rhode of Port Clinton, Ohio, in fifth with 22-5.
The 104 pro anglers are competing for a top prize of $45,000. Co-anglers are vying for a Triton/Mercury boat and motor package valued at $32,000.
Mike Staebler of Westerville, Ohio, leads the co-angler field with 20-8. He was drop-shotting from the back of second-place pro Garrett Green’s boat and was able to quickly bring in a limit when the pair found the school of smallmouth. Together Green and Staebler had 10 fish that weighed more than 43 pounds overall.
Co-angler Gary Crayton of Farmington, Pa., was in second with 19-1; Tom Alt of Columbia City, Ind., was in third with 18-4.
Frank Scalish of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who led the points in the Northern Open division standings coming in to the Lake Erie event, was in sixth on the pro side Thursday with 21-8 and is on track for a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic, set for Feb. 19-21 on Lay Lake out of Birmingham, Ala.
“I’m right where I need to be, but I’m fishing in a way I don’t normally fish up here, in places I don’t usually catch ’em,” Scalish said. “If I can go (Friday) where I was today, I think I can duplicate this.”
The top two pros after this final Northern Open will be awarded berths in the Classic, while the top seven competitors will be invited to fish the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series season.
The three-day tournament’s launches and weigh-ins are at Shelby Street Boat Launch, 101 Shelby St. in Sandusky, Ohio. Takeoff on Friday and Saturday is set for 7 a.m. ET. Weigh-ins will begin at 3:05 p.m.

PAA Anglers Bring Impressive Accomplishments to Pittsburg
By Pete Robbins
Pittsburgh, Penn. – When the 77 contenders blast off Thursday morning for the first day of the Forrest Wood Cup in search of a one million dollar top prize, 42 of them will be members of the Professional Anglers Association (PAA) among their ranks. That’s 55 percent, thereby demonstrating the PAA’s increasing dominance in the world competitive angling.
For some of them it will be “déjà vu all over again.” Ten of the 47 anglers in the 2005 Bassmaster Classic field, held at this same venue (with some slight differences in the actual playing field) will get another shot at glory this week. They include Mike Iaconelli, David Walker, Stacey King, Tommy Biffle, Luke Clausen, Larry Nixon, Takahiro Omori, Chris Baumgardner, Greg Hackney and Jay Yelas. Among that group, Iaconelli (5th) was the only one to finish in the top 10. Yelas and Hackney were the lowest finishers – they tied four other anglers with a goose egg.
The following presents a few key facts about the PAA members shooting for the big prize this week:
GEOGRAPHY
Shinichi Fukae, of Japan, hails from the longest distance away (unless you count Takahiro Omori, a Japanese native who currently resides in Texas);
Dave Lefebre is the only home-state contender;
Nearby New Jersey has two anglers in the field, Mike Iaconelli and Pete Gluszek;
The other northeastern angler is Terry Baksay of Connecticut;
The field includes one itinerant fisherman, Luke Clausen;
Texas has produced the most anglers in the field, six;
Arkansas and Tennessee each have five representatives;
The Northwest is represented by two anglers, Ken Wick or Idaho and Jay Yelas of Oregon (three if you count Clausen, a Washington native);
Nine states have one representative a piece.
FORREST WOOD CUP HISTORY
38 of the PAA representatives have previously qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup;
Among those 38 anglers, they’ve previously fished a total of 166 FWCs;
The group includes three FWC winners, Scott Suggs, Luke Clausen and Anthony Gagliardi;
Andy Morgan and Clark Wendlandt have fished the most FWCs, 11 apiece;
Larry Nixon and Dan Morehead are the only other two in double digits, with 10 apiece;
David Walker and Wesley Strader have fished 8 apiece;
Tommy Biffle and Anthony Gagliardi have fished 7 a piece.
FLW OUTDOORS ACHIEVEMENTS
Twelve different anglers have won a total of 25 FLW Tour regular season events;
Anthony Gagliardi, Larry Nixon and Clark Wendlandt have won three regular season FLW Tour events apiece:
Shinichi Fukae and Dan Morehead have won two regular season FLW Tour events apiece;
Fourteen different anglers have won a total of 25 Stren tournaments;
Koby Kreiger has won the most Strens, four;
Dan Morehead and Bryan Thrift have each won three Strens, although two of Thrift’s victories were on the co-angler side of the tournament;
Pete Gluszek, Andy Morgan and Craig Powers have each won two Strens;
Four different anglers – Sean Hoernke, Mike Hawkes, JT Kenney and Mark Rose – have won a regular-season FLW Series tournament;
Greg Hackney is the only member of the group to have won the FLW Series East/West Fish-Off
David Curtis is the only PAA member in the field to have won a Texas Tournament Trail tournament – he claimed victory on that now defunct circuit three times.
THE “OTHER” TOUR
Four PAA anglers in the field fish full-time on the Bassmaster Elite Series trail – Tommy Biffle, Greg Hackney, Mike Iaconelli and Takahiro Omori;
Twenty-two of them combine for 133 Bassmaster Classic Appearances
Luke Clausen, Larry Nixon, Jay Yelas, Takahiro Omori and Mike Iaconelli have all won the Bassmaster Classic;
Nixon’s Classic victory came on the Ohio River system, the same system this tournament will be on;
Nixon has been to the Classic the most times, 25;
Other anglers in the group with double-digit numbers of Classic appearances are Jay Yelas (16), Tommy Biffle (15), Stacey King (12) and Mike Iaconelli (10).
Fifteen of the anglers have combined for a total of 53 BASS wins, including Bassmaster Classics;
Nixon has the most BASS wins of the group, 14, including a Classic and three Megabucks titles;
Yelas, Omori and Iaconelli have eight, six and five BASS wins, respectively.
Six other anglers have multiple BASS wins to their credit – Biffle (4), Hackney (3), King (2), Mann (2), Morehead (2) and Art Ferguson (2);
Twelve of the anglers have won both BASS events and FLW Outdoors tournaments (not including BFLs). They are Pete Gluszek, Tom Mann Jr., Larry Nixon, Jay Yelas, Chris Baumgardner, Tommy Biffle, Greg Hackney, JT Kenney, Koby Kreiger, Dan Morehead, Takahiro Omori and Mike Iaconelli.
